The best blinds for Pakenham heat.
Above 35 degrees with a northerly, a west-facing living room in a Cardinia estate becomes unusable by mid-afternoon. Here is what genuinely helps, what only looks like it helps, and which rooms to fix first.
Why Pakenham glare is worse than it should be.
Two local factors stack up. First, the corridor gets extended hot dry spells above 35 degrees with harsh northerly and westerly afternoon wind and sun. Second, the newer estates that make up most of the housing here are built on small blocks with shallow eaves, often around 450mm. An eave that size shades a north window at noon in January and does nothing at all at 4pm when the sun is low in the north-west. So the peak heat load arrives at exactly the hour the glass is least protected, and there is no mature tree canopy in a five year old estate to help.
One honest caveat before the product comparison. Every blind in this guide is an internal blind, which means the sunlight has already come through the glass and become heat inside the room. An external awning, shutter or shade sail intercepts it before it gets in and will always out-perform an internal blind for raw heat rejection. Internal blinds are what most people can actually fit and afford, they make a real difference, and it is worth knowing where their ceiling is.
The four options ranked for heat.
1. Honeycomb cell blinds in side channels.
The best internal performer. The honeycomb structure holds a layer of still air between the room and the glass, which is the same principle as double glazing on a smaller scale. Fitting it in side channels matters more than people expect: without channels, warm air convects up the gap between blind and glass and around the edges into the room, which undoes a good part of the benefit. 2. Light-coloured blockout rollers.
A blockout roller stops all light through the fabric, and a light or reflective backing bounces a meaningful share of the radiation back out before it becomes room heat. This is the cheapest effective heat answer at $120 to $320 per window. The catch is obvious: you are in the dark, and on a 38 degree day at 4pm you will probably want to see out.
3. Sunscreen rollers.
Sunscreen fabric cuts glare and a good share of UV while keeping your view of the backyard. It does not stop as much heat as blockout, but it is what makes a room usable rather than merely dark. The whole decision is the openness factor, covered below.
4. Venetians and verticals.
Venetians let you tilt the slat so the light is thrown at the ceiling rather than into your eyes, which is excellent for glare and mediocre for heat, because the slats themselves warm up and radiate into the room. Verticals do the same job on a wide sliding door and stack out of the way. Both are better glare tools than heat tools.
Openness factor, explained properly.
Openness factor is the percentage of a sunscreen fabric that is open weave rather than yarn. It is the single most useful number on a sunscreen sample, and almost nobody explains it at the point of sale.

Colour interacts with openness. A light fabric reflects more heat outward but washes out the view and shows glare as a bright haze. Room by room priority.
- West and north-west living areas. Do these first. Biggest heat load, most waking hours. Honeycomb or a double roller.
- Bedrooms. Second, mostly for darkness and sleep. Blockout rollers, cordless if children can reach.
- East-facing rooms. Strong morning sun that is gone by the peak of the day. Sunscreen or a light-filter roller is usually enough.
- Kitchen and wet areas. Wipeable products, so aluminium venetians or a plain roller.
- South-facing rooms. Last. Privacy only, cheapest option that looks consistent with the rest of the house.
