Motor quote checklist

Compare motorised blinds quotes by motor, wiring and controls

A fair motorised blinds quote must name the base blind, fabric, motor type, power source, remote, hub, charger, GST, installation and any electrician cost. If one Pakenham quote is $900 cheaper, check whether it left out motors on some windows, a hub, hardwired wiring, removal or child-safe fittings.

Motorised blind quotes are harder to compare than ordinary roller blinds because the hidden parts are where the money sits. Two quotes can both say "battery motorised rollers", but one includes a reliable rechargeable motor, a multi-channel remote, brackets, charger, hub and setup, while the other prices only a motor upgrade on top of a basic blind. Before you commit to a living area, high stairwell or whole-home automation job in Pakenham, Officer or Beaconsfield, tick off the details below.

If you are still deciding whether motors are worth it, read the motorised blinds guide. For non-motor pricing, use the 2026 blinds pricing guide. If the quote includes heat control, compare fabric choices in best blinds for Pakenham heat and blockout vs sunscreen blinds.

Red flags that should make you walk away

  • The quote says "smart blinds" but does not include a hub, bridge or setup line.
  • Hardwired motor work is included but no licensed electrician is named.
  • The motor brand, warranty or replacement path is missing.
  • A large deposit is requested before final measure or without a proper written quote.
  • The quote promises whole-home custom motorised blinds installed in a few days with no explanation of stock, fabric or manufacture.

What the written quote has to state

The quote should let you rebuild the job from paper. For each opening it should state the room, product, size or measured opening reference, fabric range, colour, control side where relevant, motor type, remote channel, fitting position and price. It should also say whether the motor is rechargeable battery, hardwired 240V, plug-in transformer or a low-voltage system supplied by an electrician. If the quote promises app control, the hub or bridge should appear as a separate line or be clearly included.

For a typical Pakenham new-build living area, the difference can be material. Three manual sunscreen roller blinds might be $750 to $1,100 supplied and installed. Add battery motors to those three and the job commonly becomes $1,300 to $2,000. Add a smart hub, double roller brackets and blockout backing, and the same wall can become $2,100 to $3,000. None of that is wrong, but it has to be visible.

Common exclusions that become variations

ExclusionTypical extraWhy it matters
Smart hub or bridge$150 - $350Needed for app schedules and voice control on many systems
Extra remote$80 - $180Useful when bedrooms and living areas need separate control
Charging access or extension cable$30 - $120High blinds may need practical charging arrangements
Licensed electrician$180 - $550+Needed for hardwired motors, switches or new power points
Old blind removal$8 - $25 per blindOften left out of a low headline price
Wi-Fi troubleshooting after install$90 - $180Needed when the home network blocks app setup

Deposits, licences and registration checks

In Victoria, Consumer Affairs guidance for domestic building work caps deposits at 10 percent where a contract is under $20,000 and 5 percent at $20,000 or more. Ordinary internal blinds jobs often sit below those levels and many are handled with a smaller custom-order deposit or payment on completion. A deposit is not automatically wrong because blinds are made to your measurements, but a high upfront payment on a simple internal battery motor job deserves a written reason.

Hardwired motorised blinds are the point where licensing matters most. A blinds installer can measure, supply, fit, program and explain the blind system. Electrical installation work needs a licensed electrician and testing under the wiring rules. For external awnings, outdoor blinds or work attached to the outside of a home, Victoria has Building and Plumbing Commission classes that cover attaching external fixtures, and registration can matter on larger or combined domestic building contracts. This internal blinds business does not do electrical wiring. If a quote bundles wiring without a separate electrician, ask for the licence details before work starts.

When the cheaper quote is the right call

You do not need motors everywhere. The best value in many Cardinia homes is to motorise the wide living-room blinds, high stairwell blinds and any blind behind a couch, then keep bedrooms manual or cordless. That can save $600 to $1,800 on a whole-home quote without making the home harder to use. A rental property in Koo Wee Rup or Bunyip usually does not need app-controlled blinds at all; plain manual rollers are easier for tenants and cheaper to repair.

The cheapest quote is worth taking when it includes the same fabric, the same number of motors, the same remotes and the same installation scope. If it is cheaper because it leaves half the blinds manual, uses no hub, excludes electrical work or avoids disposal, that is not a discount. It is a different job.

Frequently asked questions

What should a motorised blinds quote include?
A motorised blinds quote should state the blind product, fabric, motor type, power source, remote or hub, charger, installation, GST, warranty and any electrician cost. For a 6 to 10 blind Pakenham job, a useful quote is usually 2 to 4 pages because motor details matter. If the quote only says motorised blinds throughout, you cannot compare it properly.
How much extra do motors add to a blinds quote?
Battery motor upgrades usually add $150 to $280 per blind, while hardwired motor upgrades are often $220 to $350 per blind before electrical work. A smart hub or bridge is commonly $150 to $350 per home. The base blind still has to be priced, so a whole living area can move from $900 in manual rollers to $1,700 to $3,000 with motors and controls.
Are electrician costs included in motorised blinds quotes?
Hardwired motor quotes usually exclude electrical wiring unless they clearly include a licensed electrician. A new power point, switch or circuit work can add $180 to $550 or more depending on access. Battery motors avoid most wiring cost and are usually the practical retrofit choice for finished Pakenham homes.
What deposit is reasonable for motorised blinds?
For residential jobs under $20,000, a deposit above 10 percent is a warning sign if the job is domestic building work. Many internal blinds jobs use a smaller deposit or payment on completion, even when custom motor parts are ordered. A large deposit should come with an itemised written quote, business details and a clear cancellation position.
How do I check registration or licensing?
Check electrical work through Energy Safe Victoria or ask for the electrician details before hardwired work starts. For external fixtures or larger domestic building contracts, check Building and Plumbing Commission registration. For ordinary internal battery motor blinds, the main checks are written business details, product warranty, child-safe controls and a clear install scope.
